U.S & RUSSIA ON NUCLEAR CUTS

Can this work out for real or the usual diplomatic move to whitewash a global peace move. By reaching a deal to cut back their stockpiles of nuclear weapons does not guaranty global peace. It will only instigate other nations to want to demonstrate their relevance in the building of nuclear technology.

CRISIS IN CHINA'S REGION OF XINJIANG

Peace is eluding yet another section of the globe. This time it is China. There is protests going on. It is being tagged as one of the most serious violence in decade. 140 people are reported dead already.

WEAPON OF WAR SHALL PERISH: Rev. Babatunde E. Ajibola

In the book of Ecclesiastes 9:11, it is written that the race is not for the swift, nor the battle to the strong. In Ps.i27:1-2, it is also written that except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: and except the Lord keep the city. the watchman wake watching in vain.
It is being reported that North Korea has conducted yet another nuclear test which is said to be more powerful than the one it carried out in 2006. The move which has continuously motivate great concern among nations is seen as a threat to world peace.
North Korea like every other nations of the world is presumably trying to make her position known as to how much she is feeling concern for her own safety and to join in the nuclear race so as to earn respect respect among nations and to feel secured within her territory. This is the mentality of all nations of the world and there seems to be a tint of hypocracy in the manner in which the so called powerful nations of the world are reacting against North Korea adamancy. It is not to say that I am in support of what North Korea is up to. I am not in support of the other nations of the world that have stockpiled weapons of war and at the same time want other nations of te world not to follow suite.
Japan has condemned North Korea, in like manner Obama and Gordon Brown of Britain has joined their voice in condemning North Korea. I wish to say tht there is no nation of the world that should have the exclusive right to stockpile weapons of war as the entire peace loving community of the world are calling for peace. We should know for sure that one day there shall always be a falling and the weapon of war shall always perish.
It is not enough to condemn North Korea but that every Nation of the world should shed the ambition to join the list of powerful nations in order to bully one another and to flex muscles.
The nations of the world should start to learn to say; "Some trust in chariots and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.
They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand up right."Ps.20:7-8
The name of the Lord is a strong tower and the righteous nations shall run into it and feel safe.
It is not enough for nations to sit wit one another to sign treaty of peace and agreement to dismantle the weapon of war only to go back and solidify their arsenal of weapons of war.
To the nations it will be appropriate to say as Paul writes in the book of Romans 3:9-18 "What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
As it is written, THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NO NOT ONE:
THERE IS NONE THAT UNDERSTANDETH, THERE IS NONE SEEKETH AFTER GOD.
THEY HAVE ALL GONE OUT OF THE WAY, THEY ARE TOGETHER BECOME UNPROFITABLE; THERE IS NONE THAT DOETH GOOD, NO, NOT ONE.
THEIR THROAT IS AN OPENSEPULCHRE; WITH THEIR TOGUES THEY HAVE USED DECEIT; THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS:
WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS:
THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD:
DESTRUCTION AND MISTERY ARE IN THEIR WAYS:
AND THE WAY OF PEACE HAVE THEY NOT KNOWN:
THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES."
For these reasons the Lord God the creator of heaven and earth and that knows the spirit of man that is in him will take over the kingdom of this world and give it to the Son and His Saints that He may rule the people and break all the imagery of idols with the iron rod. His kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom of peace and everything both in heaven and earth shall be under His footstool.
"For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Councellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to other it, and to establish it with judgement and with justice from henceforth even forever. The zeal of the LORDOF HOSTS WILL PERFORM THIS."Is.9:6-7

THE CHOICE OF AN EX-PRESIDENT

Not all that glitters can be gold and the love of money is said to be the root of all evils. For this reason the bible passage asked the question that of what need is it for a man or woman to gain the entire world and lose his or her soul. Many have placed their entire hope in life on the riches they have accumulate and the struggle to occupy the highest office in their community end up being a snare that takes away every source of life away from them. It is therefore better to serve with honesty than to allow the enlarged desire of man drive us beyond what is best for our joy and peace of mind. The story below just let us to know that money cant buy it all. If we know the Lord and allow His principles of Hiis Kingdom guide us, we can recite as in Psalm 16:5-6 "The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.
The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SEOUL, South Korea – Embattled former President Roh Moo-hyun — a reformist shamed by a corruption scandal that tarnished his image as a "clean" politician — jumped to his death while hiking in the mountains behind his rural home in southern South Korea, his lawyer said. He was 62.

Roh was hiking in the village of Bongha when he threw himself off a steep cliff around 6:40 a.m. Saturday (2340 GMT Friday), lawyer Moon Jae-in told reporters in the city of Busan. In a suicide note left for his family, Roh said life was "difficult" and apologized for making "too many people suffer," a TV report said.

He was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead from a head injury around 9:30 a.m. (0030 GMT), Busan National University Hospital said.

The apparent suicide — the first by a modern South Korean leader — shocked the nation. South Koreans huddled around TV screens at Seoul's main train station and elsewhere watching broadcasts of the news.

"I was utterly shocked," said Chun Soon-im, 63, of Seoul. "They say 'hate the sin but not the sinner,' and that's how I feel. The investigation must continue and we must get to the truth, but I cannot help feeling sorry for the man and those left behind."

Roh, a self-taught former human rights lawyer who lifted himself out of poverty to reach the nation's highest office, prided himself on his clean record in a country with a long history of corruption. He served as president from 2003 to 2008.

But he and his family have been ensnared in recent weeks in a burgeoning bribery scandal.

Last month, state prosecutors questioned Roh for some 13 hours about allegations that he accepted more than $6 million in bribes from a South Korean businessman while in office — accusations that deeply shamed him.

"I have no face to show to the people. I am sorry for disappointing you," an emotional Roh said April 30 before speaking to prosecutors.

He denied the allegations against him during questioning, prosecution spokesman Cho Eun-sok said.

Roh had acknowledged that local shoe manufacturer Park Yeon-cha gave his wife $1 million, but suggested it was not a bribe. He also said he was aware Park gave $5 million to another relative but said he thought it was an investment. Prosecutors suspect the $6 million was eventually conveyed to Roh.

Several of Roh's former aides and associates have also been investigated on suspicion of taking money from Park, who was indicted in December on separate bribery and tax evasion charges. Roh's elder brother was sentenced last week to four years in prison in a separate bribery scandal.

Justice Minister Kim Kyung-han, expressing "surprise and grief," said in a statement that the monthslong investigation of Roh would be closed.

President Lee Myung-bak called Roh's death "sad and tragic," and said it was "truly hard to believe," presidential spokesman Lee Dong-kwan said.

Benita Ferrero-Waldner, external relations commissioner for the European Union, said an EU delegation was entering the presidential Blue House for a summit with Lee when they heard the "very sad news."

Roh — who after leaving office moved back to his hometown of Gimhae, some 280 miles (450 kilometers) south of Seoul — had gone for an early walk in the mountains behind his house. He was accompanied by a security guard, Busan police said.

Partway up, Roh hurled himself off a steep cliff known as Owl's Rock about 400 feet (100 meters) high, the Yonhap news agency said. Police said they were still investigating the circumstances of Roh's death.

His lawyer confirmed that Roh left a "brief" suicide note for his family. Investigators have not seen the note, a Busan police official said. He did not give his name, citing department policy.

MBC television reported that Roh's note said he wanted to be cremated and a small gravestone erected in his neighborhood.

His death by apparent suicide was a tragic end for a man who was the son of farmers and never attended college, but managed to pass the bar exam in 1975 by teaching himself law.

Roh built a reputation as a lawyer defending students accused of sedition under South Korea's previous military-backed administrations. He was once arrested and his law license suspended for supporting an outlawed labor protest.

His political career began with his election as a liberal lawmaker to the National Assembly in 1988.

His ascension to the presidency came after a surprise 2002 election win on a campaign pledge not to "kowtow" to the United States, a pledge that resonated with young voters.

He maintained predecessor President Kim Dae-jung's "sunshine policy" of offering North Korea aid as way to facilitate reconciliation, holding a summit in Pyongyang with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in 2007, the second such meeting between leaders of the two countries that technically remain at war.

Though criticized as standoffish and divisive by some, he was praised by others as a candid leader who showed concern for the underprivileged and fought against corruption. Roh was the first South Korean president with an Internet-based fan club.

But in 2004, Roh called on the public to vote for candidates from his Uri Party — a violation of political neutrality laws. The move prompted lawmakers to vote for his impeachment, making him the first South Korean president to be impeached. He was reinstated following a two-month suspension after a court ruled against the impeachment.

"He shocked us twice — first, by betraying our trust in him as the keeper of justice when it was revealed that he'd received the illegitimate money. Now, in showing that he was not even responsible enough to face the consequences of his action," said Kim Hye-jung, 35, of Seoul. "As a supporter of the values he stood for, I feel greatly let down."

Roh is survived by his wife, Kwon Yang-sook, and two children. Funeral arrangements were not immediately available.

WILL THERE BE A LASTING PEACE: Rev.Babatunde Ezekiel Ajibola

We should all begin to ask ourselves what exactly is the root of the problem in the Middle East. Is it deeper than what we have as our point of references. Is the solution going to come from human initiatives, be it political or religion. Is the Pope's visit anything near the solution. One reliable source from which we can get the clue is the Bible. First of all, could we say of this Pope's visit to the Middle East as that spoken about in the book of Isaiah 52 verse 10;"How beautiful upon the mountain are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!" Definitely no! Why? Because the Pope is not taking the gospel to the Middle East but politics. However, when the Prince of Peace, our Lord Jesus Christ that has purchased the Kingdom by the shedding of His shall come, He shall establish the reign of peace on the earth. "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful,Counsellor, The Mighty God,The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgement and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.Isaiah 9:6-7

POPE TOUR OF MIDDLE EAST

ROME - Pope Benedict has set off for the Middle East on a self-proclaimed pilgrimage of peace.

Benedict's plane took off from Rome's Leonardo da Vinci airport Friday morning, bound for Jordan. It is the first stop of a weeklong trip that will also take him to Israel and the Palestinian territories. The Jordan stop is Benedict's first visit as pope to an Arab country and he will meet with Muslim religious leaders in Amman.

Jordan's powerful Muslim Brotherhood has demanded that Benedict apologize for his September 2006 speech in which he linked the Prophet Muhammad to violence.

The pope has already said he was "deeply sorry" over the reaction to his speech and that the passage he quoted did not reflect his own opinion.

FLYING WITHOUT WINGS

I have been away now for two months and on a busy schedule hence I have not been able to make new posting on this blog. However I am delighted to be back and to acquint my readers with what I have been up to. I left the United Kingdom for Nigeria and on my way back during the six hours flight I took time to take some pictures with the use of my handset camera. I had the advantage of sitting alone eith the sit next to me vacant in the economy class that in which I travelled. I guessed the lady that was to share the no 62 sit with me vanished after making a phone call. I suspected she was moved to a higher class by one of the cabin crew or someone in
the best position to do so. That put me at an advantage to move freely and satisfy myself in the things that I enjoyed doing. I took the advantage of available facilities to make the journey exciting. You know what we all think in our mind each time we fly. The possibility of a plane crash mixed with the thoughts of safe landing and happy reunion with love ones.
As a Christian I always believe that such misfortune as being involved in a plane crash should not be my portion. To get reassured, a constant recertation of "the Lord is my Shepherd" Psalm 23. gives me the confidence that I am secured. I washed the film titled "Australia" and couple of others. I took some photograph of the thick clouds below seizing the advantage of sitting by the window. I always sit by the windows each time I fly. I always demand for it and I always get it if they are still available. I dedicated the vacant seat by me to the Lord and I am very sure He was there sitting with me. The flight was smooth and the Air Bus aircraft crused well. Thank God. We landed at heathtrow airport at exactly 5.00pm. It was a sunny day and it was delightful flying on the Virgin Atlanti airline. Now that I am back my blogs are coming alive again. Follow me.

NUCLEAR SUBMARINE CLASH; WHAT IS THE MESSAGE? B.E. AJIBOLA

What are the signals being sent by these occurrences when instruments of war of two powerful nations that are not at war with one another clash in the waters and surveillance instruments of another two powerful nations clash in space for the first time in the history of the struggle to dominate the outer space. We should ask ourselves the question; if these incidents are just mere accident or are they premeditated? The HMS Vanguard and French submarine Le Triumphant despite the fact that they are both equipped with sonar to detect other vessels did not detect each other in the Atlantic waters where they clashed. If this is carelessness please check it. Also the clash of Russian satellite and that of the United States of America in space need be examined. The space is wide enough to accommodate as many satellite as could be launched into it, more control and specifications are only needed. The earth has enough risks threatening it's continuous peaceful existence. Let everyone of us beware. Nuclear war is never won neither would we benefit from constant loss of effective control over our technical devices. Read the News report below.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The crash between HMS Vanguard and French submarine Le Triumphant, which was also carrying nuclear warheads, is believed to have occurred on February 3 or 4.
Despite being equipped with sonar to detect other vessels, neither submarine apparently realised the other was in the same part of the ocean.
A senior Navy source told a newspaper the potential consequences of such a collision were "unthinkable".
He said: "It's very unlikely there would have been a nuclear explosion. But a radioactive leak was a possibility. Worse, we could have the crew and warheads. That would have been a national disaster."
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) refused to confirm the incident had taken place, saying it was against its policy to comment on submarine operations.
However, a spokesman insisted nuclear security had not been breached.
He said: "We can confirm that the UK's deterrent capability has remained unaffected at all times and there has been no compromise to nuclear safety."
Inquiries are under way on both sides of the Channel.

YOU CAN'T DENY THE FACTS OF HISTORY: Rev. Babatunde Ezekiel Ajibola

POPE BENEDICTS XVI

Facts of history can not be denied. Each time such an attempt to deny the facts of history is made, prejudice is always in display and it is often obvious that mischief is also is the making. Holocaust is an historic fact and it is one of the events of history that makes humanity highly degraded and worthless. We can correct this by making sure all human race no matter what religion, colour and ideological affiliation are treated equally in all matters that need be tackled to protect human dignity. There are facts of history that we can not deny because they shine above like the sunshine that the entire location of the earth feel their impact. We can not deny that the first and the second world war was fought and that millions died. We can not deny the fact that man landed on the moon. We can not deny that millions of African descent were taken as slaves and exported to the new found world of america and the islands. We can not deny the Civil Right movement in the U.S.A that inspired the 'I have a dream speech' of Martin Luther King jr. We cannot also deny the Soweto massacre by the tyranous apartheid regime of South Africa and the imprisonment of Mandela. Most importantly we can not deny the Cruxifixion of Jesus Christ of Nazareth who according to prophecy died and rose from death the third day thereby completing the work of salvation for mankind and that we celebrate Christmas to mark the birth of the Messiah. As I can not deny that I exist as I am writing this article right now, in like manner, I can not deny the existence of God who is the author of all things. What do you know do not happen that history is trying to impose on human knowledge. Make it known but definitely not one of the above. The outrage over Bishop Richard Williamson's claim that thhe holocaust never took place should be put to rest. For whatever reason the bishop denied the holocaust, it must be personal and that is that. Will the Jews also continue to deny the resurrection of Jesus Christ and that He is the Messiah that is to come? Let them think about it.

WILDERS REFUSED ENTRY

Geert Wilders had been due to show his 17-minute film Fitna, which calls the Koran a "fascist book", in the House of Lords.

But he received a letter from the Home Office on Tuesday saying he would not be allowed to come to Britain because his opinions "would threaten community security and therefore public security".

Mr Wilders, leader of Holland's Freedom Party, condemned the Government as "weak and cowardly" and made the trip anyway - but was stopped by immigration officials at Heathrow's Terminal 1.

His film sparked violent protests last year for linking verses in the Muslim holy book with footage of terrorist attacks, including the July 7 London bombings.

He is facing prosecution in Holland for inciting hatred and discriminating against Muslims and their religion after calling for the Koran to be banned.

But the Netherlands has pressed for a reversal of Britain's decision to ban Mr Wilders.

Holland's foreign minister Maxime Verhagen said: "It is highly regrettable that a Dutch MP should be denied entry to another EU country."

Mr Wilders said: "I was very surprised and very saddened that the freedom of speech that I believe was a very strong point in UK society is being harassed today."

UK Independence Party peer Lord Pearson, who invited Mr Wilders to Britain, said the screening of the film would go ahead today "with or without Mr Wilders".

He said he did not agree with all Mr Wilders' views but strongly defended his right to express them.

The Home Office said: "The Government opposes extremism in all its forms.

"It will stop those who want to spread extremism, hatred and violent messages in our communities from coming to our country, and that was the driving force behind tighter rules on exclusions for unacceptable behaviour that the Home Secretary announced in October last year."

A Muslim Council of Britain spokesman said: "Mr Wilders' xenophobic views have been identified as repugnant by a Dutch court, and is now confirmed by his official exclusion from the United Kingdom."

NIGERIA ECONOMIC STIMULUS PLAN

THE Director General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Professor Ndi-Okereke Onyiuke revealed on Monday that Nigeria lost N812 billion to capital flight in the last two years.

Professor Onyiuke made the revelation even as the Minister of Finance, Mansur Muktar and the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Chukwuma Soludo assured Nigerians that even if the international crude oil price crashed to $30 per barrel, Nigeria’s 2009 budget would not be affected.

But while the Minister of Finance disclosed that the N70 billion bailout for the textile industry would be released in the next one month, they both ruled out any bailout for banks in the face of the global economic crisis, saying that Nigerian banks were very healthy and therefore did not need to be rescued.

They spoke at a meeting with the Joint Senate Committees on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions and Capital Market and Finance.

The committees had invited the Ministers of Finance, and of National Planning, the CBN governor, Chief Economic Adviser to the President, Director General Securities and Exchange Commission, Director General, Nigerian Stock Exchange and the President, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, to an interactive session on the effect of the global economic crisis on the country and pragmatic solutions.

Professor Onyiuke said: “In 2007, we had N256 billion, equivalent of dollars. That was what was captured. Remember that a lot of Nigerians send in money through Western Union to relations, we do not capture that statistics, because we only take money wired through the banks, because Nigeria wants to avoid money laundering.

“We advise Nigerians and our investors to send money through wired transfer. We only have that captured by Nigerian banks, those are the statistics we have. We did not capture that sent through relations’ addresses. There was N256 billion that went out.

But in 2008, we now have N556 billion that went out as the governor of the Central Bank said. “When some of the investors had problems in their home countries, when the global phenomenon started, as they were losing money, they had to now come and sell such shares in our country and go back and shore up their economies at home. Our market is transparent; all the investors published their transactions every day. What happened was that it was the panicking that came through the foreign investors and affected Nigerians who are watching CNN all the time.”

The benchmark for the 2009 Budget is predicated on $45 per barrel but even with the current crash in the price of crude oil to below $40, both the finance minister and the CBN governor still assured Nigerians that if the crude price fell to $30, it would not hamper the operation and performance of the 2009 budget.

The Senators, led by the chairman of the committees, Senator Nkechi Nwogu, had asked from the economic experts how the government intended to restore confidence in the economy in the face of the global economic crunch and how to protect the financial institutions.

Acording to the finance minister, who was represented by the Minister of State for Finance, Mr. Remi Babalola: “There is no doubt that we are going to have a significant global slowdown in the economy all over the world. When the budget was was being put together, the lowest crude price was $85 and people thought we were ultra-conservative by using $45 but by January when the price came down to $40 everybody said that we should have used $30.

“All the countries that we actually looked at, like Russia, Indonessia, actually used far higher rates than Nigeria used for its budget in 2009. The most conservative estimate for crude price for 2009 is $59.

“The truth is that with the way the budget is structured, we have said so many times that even if the crude price comes down to $30 per barrel, ordinarily, the way we have worked it out, it should not affect budget implementation, it should not affect releases for budget.

“As far as we know, at this point in terms of exchange rate, in terms of interest rate, in terms of inflation rate, in terms of crude price, there are significant challenges, there are downside risks to the economy, but honestly speaking, for an economy that is still growing, it is not the way that it is being put to the market as if everything is down.”

On the efforts being made, he said a lot of things were being done, adding, “We have said it so many times. If we find out that there is a problem with the financial system we will work out modalities by which we certainly ensure that the financial system, that is the pivot of the entire economy, will not be affected, will still remain resilient and stable and we will do whatever we can to assist the financial system.

“I love it when they talk about the textile sector, that is the kind of bailout, intervention we are looking at. In the last two weeks we have had a lot of meetings with the ministry of commerce, we have set up a technical committee, they have met three times.

“The reason: it is not that we are giving them money, it is just a guarantee, so what is stopping us. There are some fundamental challenges about the way it was structured, it is difficult for it to work the way it was structured, and it may even be more than N70 billion. What we are working on now is how to immediately allow the money to be released to that sector and it is the entire sector.

“We want to look at some sectors. That is a sector that can employ more than 500,000 persons at a time and we cannot allow that sector to collapse and disappear, it is just strategic for a country that has a population of 147 million.

“That is why we are intervening. When government guarantees, even though you are not giving out the money it is as good as if you are giving out the cash, within the next one month. Five ministers are involved and we are meeting on a weekly basis. It involves, commerce, it involves agric, it involves ministry of finance and SGF office. A lot of work has gone on in the last two weeks about this.”

Meanwhile, in a desperate bid to halt the depreciation of the Naira, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has tightened rules on the foreign exchange market.

Governor of the apex bank, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, announced the new measures Monday in Abuja at a press briefing on the outcome of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.

The reduced inflow to the economy, according to the committee, had constrained supply to the market thus leaving the CBN as the main source of foreign exchange.

To save the Naira and reduce pressure on the external reserves, Professor Soludo stated that the MPC had decided to directly control the exchange rate within a band of plus or minus three per cent until further notice.

In the new foreign exchange management rule that will revolved around the CBN, Prof Soludo said henceforth, the difference between the CBN buying and selling rate would not be more than one per cent, while that of the banks and Bureaux de Change would not be more than one per cent and two per cent respectively.

To ensure that banks and Bureaux de Change operators complied with the new rules on Foreign Exchange, Prof Soludo said the apex bank monitoring team would be sent out, adding that any erring operators would be appropriately sanctioned.

Reviewing key macroeconomic developments, the CBN governor said the year- on year headlines inflation rate at end December 2008 stood at 15.1 per cent compared with 6.6 per cent at end December 2007.

Similarly, the core inflation went to 10.4 per cent in December 2008 from 3.6 per cent at end 2007. On the monetary aggregates, he said broad money grew sharply by 58.02 per cent in 2008, stressing that the growth was induced largely by the rise in credit to the private sector.

Commenting on the macroeconomic indices, Prof Soludo said the economy was currently facing paradoxes as excess liquidity was co existing with rising interest rates, which in real terms and in relation to the deposit rates seemed to be high.

Another paradox, the apex bank noted, was that the observed excess liquidity had not translated into commensurate credit creation.

In the circumstance, the MPC said it was concerned about achieving the multiple objectives of a sound financial system, price and exchange rate stability as well as ensuring that credit continued to flow to the rest of the economy.

Consequently, the committee stated that it would mop up excess liquidity in the system by actively using Open Market Operation policy while the Monetary Policy Rate, currently at 9.75 per cent remains unchanged.

On the persistently high lending rates and the wide margin between deposit and lending rates , the CBN said it would be meeting with banks’ chief executives to agree on modalities to check excesses, especially, in the light of the global economic and financial crisis.

THE SKEPTICS WILL NOT BELIEVE

THE SKEPTICS WILL NOT BELIEVE
Rev. Babatunde Ezekiel Ajibola

By the time I started to put together this write up, my heart was very heavy and because a desire was burning in my heart to make the entire world population know what the Lord Jesus said about this generation.
Do you notice how I have chosen to spell the word ‘Sceptics’ in the title of this write up, yes, I decided to spell the word in the archaic manner because what I am about to say is regarded as archaic by many and not fitting into the present day perspective of the world in general.
You might say the old time religion but I say no, it is the eternal truth which is the narrow way constructed for you and I to travel on our pilgrim journey and any other way is towards destruction.
I just received an email message from a friend who I mailed a message from my blog in which I tried to relate what is happening to the world economy as one of the signs of the end time.
In his reply, he felt I am probably becoming a dooms day prophet and he assured me things are going to be better for the world in general and that the world will continue to prosper to eternity.
He is my very good friend with whom I have done many things together with. We have both experienced the good and the bad together but while I am seeing things from the biblical point of view, he prefers to see things from the other perspectives believing we should not take the bible too serious and yet he goes to church.
I know there are many people like that out there and it makes me sad when I come across people like this because they make it appear as if to tell people about the word of God as written in the scriptures is an uphill task. Though it is not for us to take care of the inside but the Holy Spirit, may God continue to strengthen our faith to continue to tell the story of life to people so that we do not lament like Jeremiah did in Lamentation.
When we look at what is happening to the world economy, as redeemed of the Lord who pray and watch, it is obvious that we are experiencing the end time signs that must precede the great tribulation. “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.”Lk.21:36
We woke up suddenly and here we are, banks are going bankrupt, houses being repossessed, thousand s are losing their jobs, businesses closing down and there is fear everywhere in the heart beat of most men and women upon the surface of the earth if these diverse misfortunes would soon knock on their doors.
The question that is being asked is, ‘how long will this last?’ Some say it is the beginning of another world economic recession that will take time to solve, some say we might not totally get out of it for a long time.
About a week ago in the United States a man who lost his job killed his wife, his five beautiful children and finally himself leaving a suicide note that there was no need to keep his children alive and to the care of others hence he decided with his wife to include the children in the list of termination.
This man like millions in the world today have the worldly material possession as the source of their joy while for us who are redeemed of the Lord have the joy of the Lord as our strength that even if we lose the entire world we are rest assured in the Lord for the return of our captivity.
“Man's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.”Lk.21:26
To the redeemed of the Lord, let us the prudent in all our financial budgeting and avoid spending on things that we don’t actually need. We should avoid one of the fruits of the flesh which is emulation and envy which may lead us to wanting to do what we see others do. And in every thing as the scriptures say, we should with praises and thanksgiving make our needs known to the Lord.
“Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
And he led them forth by the right way that he might go to a city of habitation.”Ps.107:5-7

NO VISSIBLE SOLUTION TO ECONOMIC CRISIS

PM says 'no clear map' for crisis
Mr Brown called for a global regulatory system to prevent further problems
Gordon Brown says there is no precedent for the "first financial crisis of the global age".

History offered "no clear map" of how to deal with it, the UK prime minister told an audience at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos.

Mr Brown warned about the rising threat of protectionism and said that global co-operation was the only way forward.

"This is not like the 1930s. The world can come together," the prime minister said.

He told reporters: "This is the first financial crisis of the global age. And there is no clear map that has been set out from past experience to deal with it.

"I'm reminded of the story of Titian, who's the great painter, who reached the age of 90, finished the last of his nearly 100 brilliant paintings, and he said at the end of it, 'I'm finally beginning to learn how to paint', and that is where we are.

"We're learning all the time about how to deal with what are real problems for which we have no historical analogies to fall back on, because when the 1930s problems hit them, they did not have the global financial markets that we have today."

This is a global banking crisis and you've got to deal with it for what it is, a global banking crisis

Gordon Brown

He said a "laissez faire" attitude was not permissible and added that "there is implicit protectionism I'm afraid in what is happening at the moment".

He called for co-operation and the rebuilding of "out-of-date" institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

"This is a global banking crisis and you've got to deal with it for what it is, a global banking crisis," he said.

Global regulation

He said the solution did not lie in just nationalising banks and there was a need for a "global regulatory system" to ensure that such a crisis could be prevented in the future.

He also said there were far too many nations fearing an Asian crisis and holding on to far too many economic reserves.

The French finance minister, Christine Lagarde, warned there could be a real risk of more social unrest and protectionism unless measures were taken quickly to tackle the global economic crisis.

"I think it's a risk in Europe, it's a risk elsewhere as well, which is why I believe that time is really of the essence and we're working against the clock," she said.

Discussing the fall in the value of sterling, Mr Brown said he still believed the UK's economy was built on "sound fundamentals".

Two weeks ago billionaire investor Jim Rogers urged others to take their money out of the British economy.

Mr Brown dismissed the calls and told the Davos audience: "It think it is very clear that we are not going to build policies around self-interested speculators."

He said the UK was making the decisions it needed to on issues such as planning, science, the environment and investing in skills.

He said: "I believe we are making the right decisions for the future."

'Reward hard work'

Focusing on the G20's second meeting on 2 April in London, he said the discussions would focus on global "interdependent" issues.

The UK will chair the financial summit and Mr Brown said nations that were not members would still be consulted beforehand and their concerns would contribute to the dialogue.

BBC News diplomatic correspondent Bridget Kendall said Mr Brown was frank that there were no "ready solutions".

She said: "He admitted he and others had mistakenly believed global financial markets would spread risk - instead they'd helped spread contagion.

"He said the only way to restore trust in banks was to establish new global principles that rewarded hard work and enterprise but not what he called 'short term ridiculous risk-taking'."

THE MELTING POINT OF WORLD ECONOMY

THE TROUBLOUS WAVES ARE RISING
by B. E. Ajibola

The United States of America has beeen regarded as the melting point of world economy as such, when the bubble burst in this God's own country the ripples is felt all across the globe. Last yeat (2008) witnessed the beginning of economic recession which started like a child's play in that the economic experts and beneficials of the Wall Street business empires want us to believe that all is well until the the clouds could no more cover the sunshine of economic doom which heat is now being felt across the globe. Despite the much noise and publicity given to the economic down trend, the dollars continue to gain strenght against other world currencies.
Definitely the United States of America is the melting point of the world economy.
The IMF has revealed that the financial markets remain under stress and the global economy has taken a sharp turn for worse.
It also reveals that world economic growth in 2009 will be the lowest since 1945 with the U.K. fairing worst among advanced nations. We should ask the question, if this is happening to the green trees, what will become of the dry trees?
What will happen if things take a dimension that nobody, even the experts do not envisage. Who can then bail us out. Right now, the party politics is still raising its ugly head in the United Sate Congress. The Economic Stimulus Package just sailed through the Congress without the support of any of the Republicans. President Obama may not be able to do much if this trend continues.
If in actual fact the United States is the melting point of world economy, then Obama should be given every cooperation that he needs to move the United States forward so that we can all move forward.
According to the ILO,as many as 51million jobs world wide could be lost this year because of global economic crisis.

US House passes economic package

Mr Obama's package was passed by 244 votes to 188
The US House of Representatives has passed President Barack Obama's $825bn (£576bn) economic stimulus package.

Passed by 244 votes to 188, no Republicans backed the plan, saying it was too expensive and would not work.

It must now be approved by the Senate, where it could face stiff opposition as the Democrats have a slimmer majority.

After the vote, Mr Obama urged members of Congress not to "drag our feet or allow the same partisan differences to get in our way".

The president has said his package, which he hopes to sign into law next month, would help create a favourable climate for American business to thrive.

The bill would cut taxes for people and businesses by $275bn, while pumping more than $540bn into a range of initiatives including road and bridge repair, increased unemployment benefits, investment in new technology and renovations to 10,000 schools.

Heated debate

Mr Obama has pledged to try to end partisan division in Washington, but the debate on how best to kick start the US economy has devolved into a bitter squabble along party lines, says the BBC's Richard Lister in Washington.

President Obama said the economy can be turned around
In a heated debate, a succession of Republicans in Congress have condemned the stimulus package as a wasteful government spending exercise that will do little to create jobs.

They promoted their own bill, focussing more on tax cuts, which they said would create more jobs for half the investment.

But this was a battle they could not win in the House, where Democrats have a large majority.

It is slimmer in the Senate where Republicans could slow the bill's progress, but Democrats are confident they can get the measure through there, and they have set a target for mid-February to have the bill on Mr Obama's desk to be signed into law.

Failing to attract significant Republican support for the bill, our correspondent says, is a blow to Mr Obama's hopes of forging a new consensus in Washington, at this time of economic crisis.

Greater accountability

Mr Obama said earlier workers were looking for "bold and swift" action from leaders, and called on businesses to play their part in economic recovery by creating jobs in a "favourable climate" started by government. OBAMA PLAN: KEY POINTS
Expand Medicaid: $87bn
Help state governments: $79bn
Help school districts: $41bn
Higher unemployment benefits: $36bn
Rebuild roads: $30bn
Computerise medical records: $20bn
Green electricity grid: $11bn
Source: House Appropriations Committee

"I am confident that we are going to get it passed," Mr Obama said.

The US "cannot afford inaction or delay", he said after meeting business leaders at the White House.

Laying the blame for the economic crisis partially on a "sense of irresponsibility" on Wall Street and the government in Washington DC, he said corporate America had to take responsibility for its workers, but that Washington needed to provide leadership with the stimulus plan.

The president has said most of the money in his package would be used "immediately", creating as many as 4m jobs - the vast majority in the private sector - and that there would be a greater measure of accountability.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who was sworn in on Monday, has the task of trying to get the US economy back in shape.

Meanwhile, Mr Obama attended his first Pentagon session with the joint chiefs of staff on Wednesday, telling them the military had carried out its missions under enormous pressure, and pledging his support to the troops.

Mr Obama, who campaigned on a promise to end the war in Iraq responsibly and withdraw troops next year, said his administration faces tough decisions on Iraq and Afghanistan.

TRAGEDY

In the note, Ervin Lupoe claimed to have planned the shootings with his wife in a suicide pact because they had just been sacked.

"Why leave our children in someone else's hands," Lupoe said in the letter.

The letter also claimed that an administrator at the hospital where the couple worked said last month "you should not even had bothered to come to work today you should have blown your brains out" when it emerged they were wrongly claiming childcare benefits.

"They did nothing to the manager who stated such and did not attempt to assist us in the matter, knowing we have no job and five children under eight years with no place to go. So here we are," the note said.

The station called police after receiving the fax and the emergency services had also received a call from a man who said: "I just returned home and my whole family's been shot."

Officers rushed to the home in Wilmington, Los Angeles, within minutes of the killings and found Ana Lupoe's body in an upstairs bedroom with the bodies of the couple's twin two-year-old boys.

The bodies of an eight-year-old girl and twin five-year-old girls were found alongside Ervin Lupoe's in another bedroom. All had been shot in the head.

Deputy Chief Kenneth Garner from the Los Angeles Police said: "In the note he talked about his issues with his employer, job situation. We're not clear exactly where that is.

"We're talking to his employer right now and in the note he clearly said he was going to kill himself, his wife and his kids."

The Kaiser Permanente hospital released a statement made no comment on the claims in Lupoe's fax.

THEY ARE CUTTING JOBS

Corus set to cut 2,500 jobs in UK

Corus, a subsidiary of India's Tata Steel, employs 24,000 people in the UK
Steelmaker Corus is set to cut 3,500 jobs worldwide, including more than 2,500 in the UK, the BBC understands.

Corus said it could not comment on rumour or speculation, but the company, like all steelmakers, is facing an unprecedented downturn in demand.

One union official told the BBC Corus would announce its restructuring plans to workers at 0930 GMT on Monday.

Corus, a subsidiary of India's Tata Steel, employs 24,000 people in the UK and 42,000 worldwide.

According to the Sunday Times, the Anglo-Dutch steelmaker is not planning to close any of its British plants.

Corus's main UK sites are at Port Talbot, Scunthorpe and Teesside. It also has a site in Rotherham. The company wants to use this semi-idle period - which it expects to last for six months - to retrain its employees

Robert Peston, BBC business editor

Robert Peston's blog

Mick Fell, union chairman at Scunthorpe, said he did not anticipate there would be any job losses there, but said he imagined workers would be "quite nervous" ahead of Monday morning's announcement.

A spokesman for Community trade union, which represents steelworkers, said the reported job cut figures may have been "exaggerated".

He went on: "Any job cuts that damage the viability and long-term future of the steel industry will be looked on unfavourably."

He added that the union was committed to defending the jobs and terms and conditions of its members.

'Support workers'

Rotherham MP Denis MacShane said he had spent the weekend urging Corus to maintain the production capacity in Rotherham and South Yorkshire so "once the world slump in demand for steel is over the UK will remain a steel-making economy". CORUS IN UK
Steelworks at Port Talbot, Scunthorpe and Teesside
Engineering steels produced at Rotherham
Strip mills at Llanwern, South Wales
Tinplate works at Trostre, south Wales
Coating works at Tafarnaubach, south Wales and Shotton, north Wales
Electrical steel works at Newport, south Wales
Tube mills at Corby and Hartlepool
Plate mill at Dalzell, Scotland
Narrow strip mills at Brinsworth, England
Special section mill at Skinningrove, England
Service centre at Lisburn, Northern Ireland

He said: "The government has found billions for the banks and must do what it takes to support steelworkers and their families as we go through this global recession."

"Corus has invested in training a new generation of steel-workers and ways should be found to keep them operational rather than see steel-making disappear from the UK."

A 40% fall in global demand for steel from its peak of last year caused Corus's order book to drop by more than a third.

Steel prices have fallen by half since last September.

The company has already announced swift measures to reduce costs.

"I understand that the cuts at Europe's second-largest steelmaker have been brought forward as a result of the downturn, but it was clear to [its soon-to-retire chief executive] Mr Varin that Corus needed to become more efficient in any case," said Robert Peston.

Steelmakers around the world have been hit by falling demand from carmakers, shipbuilders, construction and heavy engineering sectors, which, in turn, have seen demand for their products drop. CORUS WORLDWIDE

Coating works at Maubeuge, north France

Tube mills at Oosterhout, Arnhem and Maastricht, The Netherlands
Rail mill at Hayange, north-east France

Service centres at Cork and Dublin, Ireland

Corus was formed in 1999 through the merger of British Steel and Koninklijke Hoogovens. In 2007, it became a subsidiary of Tata Steel.

Corus claims to be Europe's second-largest steelmaker, producing 20m tonnes of crude steel every year.

Its annual revenues are about £12bn ($16.3bn).

The company has requested financial help from the UK government for a rolling programme of providing new skills to its entire workforce.

"This would take the form of a state top-up for the wages of employees," said Robert Peston.

THE 44TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Today the world watches Senator Barack Obama sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America. There is no doubt about it that a greater number of the Americans are so excited about seeing the supposed change that dominated the political atmosphere for the last one year being inaugurated in the person of Obama. However apart from seeing the first African American elected as the President of the United State of America which is enough as a sign that Americans are serious about wanting change, there is no evidence yet that the election of Obama to the White House will bring about peace in the Middle East in particular and the world in general. There is still much to be accomplished in the economic sector before we can begin to see changes that is really worth calling change. The election of Obama to the white house generates much excitement across the globe and it has been a great source of entertainment too. Obama's speech as usual is admirable expecially his mastery of the language with which he communicates and his ability to speak it fluently as he conveys his message. A charismatic Leader and a lovely father and husband Obama is a role model across the globe. His story is a glaring example of how God intervenes in a unique way to solve human social problems and enthrone a personality that will bring about the fulfilment of the aspiration of a people that seek fot justice and social justice. Right now there is hope in the mail box of every American. Let us wish them well. Meanwhile the Obama official limousine is christened 'The Beast' If Obama had been elected in a European country I would have warned that we should beware of him being the biblical beast but he is not so no panic. However I believe Obama stands for a new era not only in American politics but also the world. Events will unfold this. Obama was realistic to tell Americans that there is not going to be a magical move that will put things in better shape immediately. The world,America inclusive should be ready to go through an era of economic belt tightening and self discpline. Goodluck America, Welcome to the white House President Obama.

THE JOY OF HAVING A BLACK PRESIDENT

What a black president means to me
Carolyn McKinstry was almost killed in a racist church bombing in segregated Alabama in the 1960s. The BBC's Matthew Price asks her what the forthcoming inauguration of America's first African-American president, Barack Obama, means to her.

Carolyn McKinstry was on her way through the church to its office when she saw the four girls through the open door to the washroom.

"Good morning," she said, and went upstairs.

Dr King did tell us we might be faced by the dogs, that the policemen might spit on you... but the only appropriate response was always a non-violent response

Carolyn McKinistry
When she reached the top, the phone rang. Normally there would be an adult at the church and she would not have answered it.

That day, though, she picked up the receiver.

"Three minutes," said a male voice on the other end, before hanging up.

Carolyn McKinstry did not know that the church had previously received bomb threats.

The children knew about the tense situation in Birmingham of course, and across the state of Alabama and the whole of the South as well. Often, though, the adults did not tell them everything.

The call perplexed her. Then as she stepped out of the office, the bomb exploded.

"I remember thinking that I heard thunder, and as quickly as I thought that, the windows came crashing down. I fell on the floor. Probably I was there 10 or 12 seconds, and then I heard people running."

Six hours later - hours of fear and chaos, of anger and hatred - Carolyn McKinstry learned that the four girls in the washroom had not made it out.

Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wasley were all killed in the explosion.

Denise McNair was 11. The others were 14 years old, just as Carolyn McKinstry was on 15 September, 1963, the day white racists blew up the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.

Institutionalised racism

Today, sitting in that same church, Carolyn McKinstry, speaks with the strength of someone who has faced down injustice, and survived with her dignity intact.

The city she grew up in, the state and the country too, have changed immeasurably in the past 46 years, and in ways she says she never imagined.

The bombing was one of the most notorious attacks of the civil rights era

When Carolyn McKinstry was growing up, state law segregated black people like her from white citizens.

She was forced to use separate schools, dine in different parts of restaurants, to live in different parts of the city.

As a child, she did not always notice the extent of it.

"It was clearly segregated. We were all aware of that, but our parents and our communities made every effort to make sure that we were not missing anything. We didn't miss what we didn't know about," she says.

She was 12 years old when she first remembers thinking about the institutionalised racism that then existed in Alabama.

Her grandfather had brought her grandmother to Birmingham, to try and find her a hospital bed.

"Hospitals did not accept black people, but we found a hospital to place my grandmother in. They placed her in the basement. It became my job as the youngest daughter to sit with her. I sat with her for two weeks until she died. I spent two weeks wondering why we were in the basement."

The church had received threats before the bombing
Birmingham, and to a certain extent its 16th Street Baptist Church, became the epicentre of the civil rights movement in 1963.

That was the year Martin Luther King Jnr and others came to the city.

"He told us that segregation was not the normal way of things," she says.

So she went to the mass meetings held at her church, where the civil rights leadership called on the black community to rise up against segregation.

"Dr King did tell us we might be faced by the dogs, that the policemen might spit on you. They might hit you, but the only appropriate response was always a non-violent response.

"When we did march, they brought the water hoses, and I remember thinking no-one had said anything about the water hoses. I remember being a little frightened, but I remember also thinking that... Birmingham was not the only place with segregation laws.

"It was not something you could run from, I did understand that."

Like thousands of others she did not run.

'Wonderful culmination'

Today, four decades after she almost lost her life because of the colour of her skin, Carolyn McKinstry still works at the 16th Street Baptist Church.

On Tuesday, she will walk the short distance downtown, a few blocks, into the city's auditorium, and there she will watch the big screens with awe as an African-American becomes president of her country.

"In Dr King's speech - his 'Dream speech' - he talked about being looked at and evaluated based on the merits of your character and your competence as opposed to what colour you were. I think that we've come just about full circle on that," she says.

"If you've lost friends along the way, if you've had friends killed through this journey, this is just a wonderful culmination. It says that they didn't die in vain. It brings true the words that Martin Luther King gave at the funeral of the four girls here.

"He said their blood might well serve as a redemptive force not just for Birmingham, but for America."

WILL THERE BE PEACE?

Gaza is burning and the entire world is in focus but then there still is no solution to the problem. Over three thousand years ago the same people that are setting fire on Gaza and at the same time sending rockets to blast Israel are the same people who are today setting the area ablaze, Israel and the Palestinians. In this same area the popular King of Israel. the young shepherd boy David brought down Goliath the Philistine hero who for forty days held Israel to ransome and insalted the God of Israel. Today, the young men of Palestine are still throwing stones against the Israeli army as if saying, if David killed our ancestor Goliath with stone, then it is time to kill your heroes with stones.
Unfortunately, a more sophisticated weapon of war is now being used in the acts of warfare. Do not let us underrate the power of stones as a weapon and the miracle that could accompany it. Though if it is all about throwing stones it would have been better but the devastating instruments of war in use are making the entire war jittery and yet nobody can stop the carnage permanently.
There is protest match now across the globe against Israel continuous bombing of Gaza and the death roll going higher. Women and children and the civilian population baring the blunt of the fatal condition of war. As the question is being asked, "who can stop it" The answer is nobody. Not even reasoning or human compasion. The area is a battle invested domain and it will continue to burn until there is divine intervention. Not even Obama who many are calling upon to speak out against the carnage. What bush could not accomplish in Gaza not even a thousand Obama can. No matter how many mouths yell the slogan "Yes we can" the carnage in the Middle East and every other volatile domain of the world will continue. The bible specifically states clearly; "For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape."1Th,5:3. Human dipomatic moves will not work because each time we sit around the table to negotiate for peace it is always with deceit and hidden bitterness at the back of our mind. This is what we call dipomacy.
Israel is an instrument in the hand of God and the earlier the Arab nations face the fact that Israel has come to be a Nation and nothing can change this. Israel also should know for sure that even though they are once more a nation, it is not for their sake but to prepare the the domain for the second coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ who they crucified that the purpose of the redemption programme of God be brought to fulfilment. They are only playing their historic role as the pen and paper with which God sends His message and revelation of His divine programme to the entire world.
The only hope that man has for peace is to look forward to the arrival of the Prince of Peace whose government shall destroy all instruments of war and reshape the heart of men from violence to a peaceful one thereby bringing the kingdom of God to manifestation.
"And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
And many people shall say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountains of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us his ways, and will walk in his path: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spares into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more."Is.2:2-4
